Congratulations are in order to the Ministry of Health and the government of Malawi for partnering with Madonna’s Raising Malawi Foundation to construct and help operate the country’s first pediatric surgery and intensive care unit (ICU) – The Mercy James Pediatric Surgery Unit. It goes without saying that all this would not have materialized in the absence of the Malawi government’s support and approval. Once again, thumbs up.

We also take a bow for Madonna for the immense love and dedication she has shown for the children of Malawi and to the whole nation. It is only in November last year that she announced Raising Malawi’s intentions to construct a paediatric ward in the country. Just two years down the line and those plans have materialized and the unit is set to open its doors early next year. Bravo!

The pediatric surgery unit will double the number of surgeries on children each year and will save lives with critical intensive care services. Adding to that, the facility will be a training center of excellence for southern Africa with local doctors acquiring the skills needed to perform pediatric surgery.

On her birthday on 16 August 2016, Madonna asked her fans to donate to her charity Raising Malawi foundation in order to help bring happiness and health to children in Malawi.

Adding to the paediatric surgery unit, Raising Malawi has 1. built 10 schools in rural Malawi serving 5,600 children, 2. Performs 700+ pediatric surgeries each year, 3. Provides education, health and malaria support for 700+ orphans each year, and 4. Offers educational sponsorships, including for girls’ secondary school.

Opening Soon!!! Soche East Shopping Mall

mall

Impressive!!!

This is the word that best describes the newly constructed ‘Soche East Shopping Mall’ situated near Kudya filling station in Blantyre. Not yet open to the public, yet its presence has already face-lifted the Soche East area.

While many will give credit to the architects for a wonderful design that the shopping mall boasts, we at Progress Malawi are looking at the social-economic impact the center will have on the surrounding communities. The catchment area is huge; from Naperi, Chitawira and Zingwagwa to Mkolokosa, Soche-East, Chimwankhunda and Manja; and we also have Chilobweans to the list of beneficiaries.

Recently, the Kudya area has been steadily growing into a commercial center and the opening of the Soche East Shopping centre will just add more wood to the fire. Progress Malawi will be following closely and keep you posted on when the mall will be launched. Such an exemplary investment deserves all the publicity it can get.
