Ministry of Agriculture warns of Red Locust outbreak

The Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development says there is an outbreak of Red Locust in Mulanje District.

In a statement the Ministry has released says locust swarms were first sighted on 19th September in Chinyama Section along the Ruo River.

The statement further says the affected areas include Unyolo 1 and 2, Sanyika, Ntiza, Thembe, Samela and Golden.

So far the locusts have been seen in various plantations and have damaged crops such as cassava, maize, banana, sweet potatoes and pigeon peas.

In the statement the Ministry says the locusts are moving towards the direction of Luchenza in Thyolo District and Thuchila EPA on the border with Chiradzulu District.

The Ministry is assuring the public that it is doing everything possible to control the situation adding that officials will assist the communities with pesticides.

Meanwhile communities have been advised to refrain from picking and consuming weakened or dead locusts which have been sprayed with pesticides.
